Janie Whitman, the protagonist in First Course, undergoes a life-changing twenty-four hours. First, she loses her job in Chicago and the boyfriend/boss there breaks up with her. Then, hard on those happenings, her parents die in a plane crash, and her sister, Alyssa, learns that her spouse has been cheating on her. Because her sister has fallen apart, Janie assumes the care of her nieces while simultaneously dealing with the angst of arranging her parents’ funeral and serving as executor of their estate. The sisters and nieces move to the family’s summer home in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, to try to recover. Janie’s cure-all for their problems: cooking food, lots of great, delicious food.

This is a perfect summer beach or airplane read. The reader gets to indulge in mouth-watering descriptions of food while the two sisters negotiate new normals, rebuild their lives, and discover the potential for new loves.
