Editing Services

Editing is crucial—it’s insurance that your novel conveys your message. If a reader can’t visualize what’s going on or gets turned off by grammatical and punctuation errors, they may never finish reading the words you’ve slaved over. Whether you are self-publishing or seeking a Big Five contract, having an objective pair of trained eyes review your product is essential.

Editing is a lot of work and requires many different skills and a sharp eye. I’ve edited for a mainstream and romance publishing company and served as fiction editor for an online literary magazine. In all, I’ve worked on over 200 novels, 1000 short stories, and two anthologies. I can provide structural editing, line editing, copy editing, or a final proofread. I’ve also written three books with two more on the way, so I know the angst of being an author.

Please take a look below at the levels of editing I provide. If you have further questions, please contact me at suanneschafer [dot] author [at] gmail [dot] com. Please put the word “EDITING” in the subject line and include your genre and word count. If you send the first fifteen pages in the copy of your email (not an attachment), I will do a sample edit and return it to you. You can decide if we are compatible based on that representative snippet and we can establish a price based on how much editing I feel your work needs. This will range between one cent and five cents per word.

Basic Copy Editing

is for your final edit when you have no planned substantive revisions before formatting, proofreading, and publishing. It assumes you have a fairly clean final draft. It includes checking your grammar, spelling, and punctuation for accuracy; ensuring consistency in your writing, word choices, style, and formatting; and eliminating repetitious words and jargon.

Premium Content Editing

is the ideal choice for when you desire honest feedback and thorough professional guidance. This is a two-pass edit. The first pass looks at evaluates the continuity and flow of your thoughts, looks at characterization, goals, motivation, and conflict, and analyzes the overarching story of your novel. At that point, we can discuss changes by email, telephone or Skype. After you have made those changes in a timely manner, we proceed to the second level which includes copy and line editing by correcting spelling, grammar, and punctuation; evaluating word choice; removing jargon and repetition; ensuring style consistency; revising inappropriate verb tenses; and inserting transitional phrasing. You’ll receive assessment and feedback on your manuscript through your document’s comment section and in personalized remarks at the beginning or end of your manuscript. And, lastly, we can discuss changes by email, telephone or Skype.
