Edge of the Fall is a genre-bending blend of adventure, psychological thriller, and wilderness survival.
Dr. Ian Sizemore, dealing with chronic pain and depressed after the deaths of his wife and daughter, is driving in the mountains during a snowstorm when he spies a crashed vehicle. Despite his pain, he hikes down the steep mountainside to ascertain if there are survivors. After being mauled by a bear as he nears the wreck of an old station wagon, he manages to crawl inside and discovers a mother, Emily, and her autistic son, Charlie, huddled inside.
Most of what occurs next is the threesome trying to survive in a sub-zero blizzard in wreck. Emily is reluctant to tell him why she and Charlie ended up in the mountains but gradually the reader learns her secrets—and Ian’s.
The author’s descriptions of the fierce cold, the snow, the damage to the station wagon, the grizzly bear and her cubs, are spot on and really amp up the suspense. This is a gripping, unputdownable read.
